Summer season sees pump prices up slightly

GasBuddy’s survey of 201 stations in Modesto shows that average gasoline prices in the region have risen 0.9 cents per gallon in the last week, coming in at a $5.21/gallon average as of July 6.

Prices in Modesto are 57.4 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand $1.01/gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has decreased 11.8 cents compared to a week ago and stands at $4.758 per gallon.

According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Modesto was priced at $4.79/gallon while the most expensive was $5.99, a difference of $1.20/gallon. The lowest price in the state was $3.69 while the highest was $9.79, a difference of $6.10/gallon.

The national average price of gasoline has fallen 6.8 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.71/gallon on July 6. The national average is down 41.3 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 62.7 cents per gallon higher than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country.

Neighboring areas and their current gas prices include: Stockton - $5.04/gallon, down 7.4 cents per gallon from last week’s $5.11; Oakland - $5.38, down 3.3 cents from $5.42; and San Jose - $5.38, down 4.5 cents from last week’s $5.42/gallon.

“Average gasoline prices fell in nearly every state over the last week, with diesel declining in all 50, pushing the national average to approximately $3.74 per gallon this July 4 — the third most expensive Independence Day on record, but well off the peak of $4.57 per gallon seen in May,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “GasBuddy is now tracking 41 states with average gasoline prices below $4 per gallon, while 37 states are seeing average diesel prices below $5.”

Historical gasoline prices in Modesto and the national average going back five years show the lowest price of $4.18 per gallon for Modesto was on July 6, 2021 and the lowest U.S. average price of $3.09 was in 2025. Highest Modesto price of $6.00 per gallon was July 6, 2022 while the highest U.S. average was $4.76 per gallon, also in 2022.
