Traditionally used as a fundraiser for the Escalon High School volleyball program, this year’s alumni event is being offered in a somewhat different format.
The evening usually includes the fun ‘Buff Puff’ volleyball featuring EHS male athletes taking the court and doing their best in unfamiliar territory. Then, a team of alumni face off against the current varsity girls volleyball team in what has tended to be a highly competitive match.
With the buff puff portion not able to go on this year, the night will still feature a couple of contests.
Friday, July 9 is the date for the volleyball event, with two teams of alumni playing each other first, at 6 p.m.
The winning alumni team will then face off against the EHS varsity girls at 7 p.m.
A small admission fee of $3 will be charged for adults and $2 for seniors, ages 65 and older, and children, ages six to 17.
“It is usually a fundraiser, however this year it is just for fun,” said varsity volleyball head coach Teresa Williamson.
All are welcome to attend the fun evening to watch the alumni players in action and cheer on the varsity team as they work to top the talented former Lady Cougars.
It is just one of many sporting events going on this summer on and around the campus. Cougar baseball has just wrapped up a busy June; the football program has been working hard and seeing some success on the gridiron. Football enters its CIF-mandated ‘dark period’ on July 12. Practices can start up again on July 26 and the first scrimmage can be scheduled on Aug. 13.
Volleyball starts its dead period on July 19; practices can resume on Aug. 2 with the first scrimmage on Aug. 13.
The boys basketball team has been active as well, with the Cougars getting in some valuable work on the hardwood this summer.
With plans to return to full, in person classes on the high school campus for the start of the 2021-22 school year in August, hopes are also high that full seasons will be available for the EHS sports squads.
To that end, the annual High School Sports Physicals Night has been scheduled and any athlete hoping to compete on a Cougar sports team for the coming school year must have a physical prior to the season. All athletes are encouraged to take advantage of the Physicals Night, as the physicals are offered at a cost of just $20. That event will be hosted on Tuesday, July 20 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., in the new gym on the high school campus.
