Escalon’s Jaylyne Serpa and Riverbank’s Jassmine Vigil helped their competitive travel soccer squad to a second place finish over the weekend in the annual Cassy Rowe Benefit Tournament.

Hosted at the Cherry Island Soccer Complex near Sacramento, the Oakdale Insanity U19 team got a pair of wins on Saturday and a tie on Sunday before taking their first and only loss of the weekend in the championship match on Sunday afternoon. On Saturday, the team, which includes players from Oakdale and Modesto in addition to Serpa and Vigil, shut out CVU Barcelona team out of Sacramento by a 3-0 final and then earned a hard fought come from behind 4-2 win against Elk Grove. Serpa had the first goal of the weekend, sending one in unassisted against CVU, then adding an assist on another goal. Serpa also had two goals against Elk Grove, with Vigil also putting one in the net in that game to tie the score at 2-2 in the second half, then assisting on the go ahead goal.

The U19 girls faced off in the first game Sunday with SF Revolution and the teams ended in a 0-0 tie. That put the Revolution in first place with 24 points out of their first three games, the Insanity had 23 so the two teams met again in the championship contest. This time, the Revolution found a way to break through while the Insanity was frustrated at the net, sending off multiple shots but never able to get one in. Revolution won the game 4-0 and never allowed a goal in their four weekend games.

The tournament was a benefit for Cassy Rowe, a player who suffered a traumatic spinal cord injury while playing soccer and is a paraplegic. She attends the tournament and is always on hand for the runner-up and championship trophy presentations, along with taking time to visit with the players and pose for photos with teams. All proceeds from the tournament help offset her ongoing medical costs.
