When the names were announced for Escalon Homecoming King candidates, there was one more than normal. A tie saw six seniors earn the nod for King candidacy, and one will be crowned at halftime of Friday night’s varsity basketball game.

The Cougars will play host to the nearby rival Riverbank Bruins as the second half of Trans-Valley League action begins. Varsity tip off will be about 7:30 p.m. and crowning of the King will be done at halftime.

In the running for the honor, in alphabetical order, are: Jacob Alvarado, Chance Bollen, Blue Capps, Tim Costa, CJ Gumbs and Edgar Samano.

“Just try to live it up at the rally,” Alvarado said when asked what he was looking forward to the most this week.

Bollen said he was excited that it’s Winter Homecoming and the festivities will be in the gm.

“It’s cold outside,” he said, chuckling.

Busy with basketball and wrestling, Capps said he “didn’t know” how he would fit in being ‘King’ but he certainly would give it his best shot. He will be suited up for the Cougars on Friday night but will stay in the gym for the halftime ceremonies instead of adjourning to the locker room with teammates.

For Costa and Gumbs, both were happy and appreciative of the nomination, while Samano went a step further, noting “I’m pumped.”

All six candidates will be featured in a Friday afternoon rally for the student body and will be escorted to center court by their parents and/or family members prior to the crowning on Friday night.

The 2017 Winter Homecoming theme is The Clash of the Classes ... Upper vs. Lower.

Monday was Sweats vs. Pajamas day, with the upper classes wearing sweats, the lower classes pajamas. Tuesday was Star Wars (upper classes) vs. Harry Potter (lower classes). After a break with no school today, Wednesday, the observance on Thursday will be Jocks vs. Nerds, with the upper classes dressing as jocks for the Jan. 26 theme day, the lower classes as nerds.

On Friday, all students are asked to wear Cougar gear and their school colors and come to the game to cheer on the boys basketball teams as they take on the visiting Bruins.
