Busy Week For Cougar Track And Field Squads

Escalon High School’s Lady Cougar track and field team soundly defeated Ripon on Wednesday, April 20 in Ripon, 75-52. Several athletes put up their best times and marks for the season.

Senior Jackie Lau took first in both her events posting the current best times in the Trans-Valley League for the 100m (12.88) and 200m (27.40) and senior Shelby McCune threw a personal best in the discus, 102-04 giving her the best mark in the league by over 10 feet. Sidney Lima took first in both hurdle races and Jessikka Gonzales took first in the high jump and triple jump and earned a third in long jump.

“Both girls are leaders in the league in their events,” head coach Carrie Nash said of Lima and Gonzales.

Freshman Kalynn Cavanaugh had a big day scoring in her three individual events (100m, HJ, and LJ) and freshman Brianna Briones had an excellent day scoring second in both the 800m and 1600m.

The boys team lost a hard fought battle, 75-61, to the Indians.

“It was a big day for senior Thaddeous Stern who ran personal bests in the 100m and 200m to win both races,” Nash said.

Junior Zach Pickett captured first in the 400m, first in high jump and second in the 200m, and sophomore Juan Lopez placed first in both the 800m and 1600m.

On Saturday, April 21 the track team traveled to Angels Camp to compete in the Hal Clements Invitational.

“We took a small group of athletes and they performed very well,” said Nash.

Standout performances included Jackie Lau second in the 100m and 200m, Shelby McCune first in Discus, Thaddeous Stern second in the 100m and fourth in the 200m, Zach Pickett second in the 400, running a personal best of 51.88, Troy Bedell second in the 3200m running a personal best of 11:05.53. Juan Lopez was fourth in the 800m (205.65 Personal Record) and second in the 1600m (4:42 PR) which gives him the top time run in the 1600m in TVL.

The EHS track and field team will host a meet at Hilmar on Wednesday, April 25 at 3:30 p.m.
