Average gasoline prices in Modesto have fallen 1.3 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $4.16/gallon on Monday, Jan. 29, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 201 stations in Modesto. Prices in Modesto are 27.6 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand 9.5 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has fallen 0.5 cents in the last week and stands at $3.87 per gallon.

According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Modesto was priced at $3.76/gallon while the most expensive was $4.99, a difference of $1.23/gallon. The lowest price in the state on Jan. 29 was $3.49/gallon while the highest was $6.79, a difference of $3.30/gallon.

The national average price of gasoline has risen 4.5 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.07/gallon. The national average is down 4.1 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 41.2 cents per gallon lower than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country.

Historical gasoline prices in Modesto and the national average going back 10 years showed the highest price in Modesto was $4.36 per gallon on Jan. 29, 2022 while the highest nationwide price was $3.49 on Jan. 29, 2023. The lowest Modesto price was $2.25 on Jan. 29, 2015 with the lowest nationwide price was $1.81 per gallon on Jan. 29, 2016.

Neighboring areas and their current gas prices include: Stockton - $4.12/gallon, up 0.8 cents per gallon from $4.12; Oakland - $4.46/g, up 2.1 cents from last week’s $4.44; and San Jose - $4.41/gallon, down 2.4 cents per gallon from last week’s $4.44/gallon.

“We’ve seen the national average price of gasoline bounce back up after cold weather-related refinery shutdowns pushed up the wholesale price of gasoline,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “While prices have inched up and may continue to slowly rise, I believe the larger increases will be witnessed in a few weeks as we enter mid-February, lasting through April or May, during which the national average could rise 35 to 85 cents per gallon.”
