Tennis Team Tops Amador In First Round Section Play

Team sections tennis action saw the Escalon Cougars host and defeat Amador in first round action on Tuesday, May 3.

It was an 8-1 win on the home courts for Escalon, with the win advancing them to round two.

In singles action, Taylor Laugero was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at girls number one, Josie Redberg won 6-1, 6-0 at number two girls. Michael Medina battled but fell in a 5-7, 3-6 match at boys number one, Everardo Peralta prevailed in a 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 match.

“Everardo battled through three sets and won in the third set. He stayed focused for over two hours and played great,” coach Staci Diaz said.

David Martinez and Tommy Pangan won 6-3, 6-0 in boys number one doubles, as did Trenton Busch and Jairo Duran, taking a 6-2, 6-3 win at number two.

Mia DeVecchio and Nicole Sarkozy battled to a three set win, Allison Rigg and Brooklyn Berry handled their opponents in straight sets.

Josiah Beltran and Courtney Ney fought their way to a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (10-6) win in mixed doubles.

“Berry and Rigg were the fifth win for us and were a great team,” said Diaz. “Beltran and Ney teamed up together for the first time and went three sets. They played well and gave us our eighth win.”

The Cougars were scheduled to head to Placer on Monday, May 9 for second round team section play, after sports press time for The Times.

Individual section action saw Laugero, Redberg, Rigg and Ney play at Oak Park in Stockton on Thursday.

“Josie Redberg made it to the quarterfinals in singles and lost to a great competitor. Allison Rigg and Courtney Ney made it to the quarterfinals and lost to a good team,” Diaz noted.

Taylor Laugero advanced into the semifinals but the second day of competition was rained out on Friday. She will head back to Oak Park for that round of competition on Thursday, May 12.
