Successful most of the season, the young El Portal wrestling team was overmatched in their final home meet of the campaign, falling to undefeated Dutcher of Turlock on Thursday, April 1.
"We don't keep score but usually we're winning more than we're losing," coach Jim Sughrue said.
Against Dutcher, however, the Panthers often found themselves lighter and shorter than their opponents, the weights not matching up very well. In a couple of bouts, El Portal students wrestled each other.
At 75 pounds, Christian Franks of El Portal defeated fellow Panther Kevin Crawford, 7-1. Brian Bentley of El Portal was pinned by Jesse Rosas of Dutcher.
At 85 pounds, Anthony Munoz was pinned by Dutcher's Dylan Frazee, while Frazee also pinned Craig Haarberg of El Portal. The 90-pound bracket saw El Portal's Thomas Martin pin his teammate, Landon Gonzales and at 100 pounds, Dutcher's Shaun Hundal pinned Adam Jefferson and defeated Chris Casey, 7-1.
It was El Portal teammates Tyler Gonzales and Jordan Lippincott competing at 110 pounds, Gonzales winning on points, then Gonzales fell in a 10-3 decision to Caleb Maldonado of Dutcher.
Mike McGuire was a 4-0 winner over his Dutcher opponent, Sorenson, at 115 pounds, then Sorenson returned the favor by pinning El Portal's Chad Keyser.
Kyle Kirkpatrick defeated his Dutcher opponent at 115 pounds, Cody Hodgson was defeated by a Dutcher wrestler at 120, 8-4 and Chase Keener lost a 10-9 decision to a Dutcher opponent at 120 pounds.
J.D. Visser won a bout at 120 pounds.
At 135 pounds, Israel Ruiz was pinned by one Dutcher opponent, then doubled back and pinned his next opponent. Nathan Vieira lost by pin at 150 pounds, Mike Flores took a 4-0 loss, also at 150 pounds.
In the 155-pound bracket, Josh May pinned his Dutcher opponent and Martin Machado earned a 3-0 win, then pinned a second opponent.
Paul Brown lost by pin at 180 pounds for the Panthers, while Jimmy Zepeda lost by technical forfeit.
The young wrestlers were slated to wrap up the campaign with a tournament in Salida and recently enjoyed a pizza party/awards night.
"We gave awards based on ability, dedication to the team and in practice," said Sughrue.
Brian Toy was presented with the Most Outstanding Lightweight award, with Israel Ruiz tapped as Most Outstanding Middleweight and Josh May, Most Outstanding Heavyweight.
