Monday, May 25 will be observed as Memorial Day and the local American Legion and VFW will put on a service at Burwood Cemetery on River Road in Escalon.

Prior to that, however, graves of veterans at the cemetery will be decorated with small American flags and the downtown streets of Escalon will also be adorned with the patriotic symbols.

"Saturday morning (May 23) we will be putting flags on the veterans' graves," explained Gustafson-Thompson American Legion Post Adjutant Darrell Voortman. "Monday morning, we will put the flags up on Main Street in Escalon and at the Highway 120 and McHenry intersection."

Flags will go up at 11 a.m. Monday, May 25 and remain in place until late afternoon, with members of the veterans' groups taking them down at 5 p.m.

The Memorial Day service itself at Burwood will begin at 11 a.m. and American Legion Post Commander Mark Sward is expected to offer a few remarks, followed by the keynote speaker, Pastor Bruce Persenaire of the Christian Reformed Church in Escalon.

An Honor Guard will be in attendance at the ceremony and a 21-gun salute is also planned. Members of the both the American Legion and VFW in Escalon take part in the ceremony.

"All veterans are welcome," added Voortman. "The more the better."
