Tuesday and Thursday meals continue to be served for senior citizens at the Escalon Community Center, through the San Joaquin County Senior Meal Program.

Lead volunteers Karen Corey and Dianna Dunn oversee the program, working with a handful of assistants and helping provide the meal and socialization for a group of local seniors. Lunch is served about 11:15 a.m., but diners arrive early to socialize, check out books from the lending library and, on some days, look through locally donated produce or food items to take home. Currently, Corey also runs the tax assistance program at the senior site each Wednesday from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.; by appointment only. Call to make an appointment, 209-783-VITA (8482); the free tax assistance is designed for low- to moderate income residents.

One Thursday each month is observed with a special birthday cake and celebration for those marking birthdays that month, with MarVal Main Street Market donating the cake. This past Thursday, honorees included site manager Karen Corey and volunteer Ginger Borba.
