Childhood is a special time in a person’s life. Kids largely have the benefit of navigating different learning experiences and recreational endeavors without the pressures of rigid schedules and navigating finances. Childhood development experts note children should be encouraged to enjoy their days and free time as much as possible before a greater array of responsibilities may come forth as they age.
There comes a time when children express a desire to take on more responsibility and become more independent. They may ask to go out alone, choose their own clothing or want to pick out meals, and it can be bittersweet for parents when they realize their little ones are growing up. According to the United Kingdom-based Family Action, a child may be ready for more independence when they consistently show certain signs of maturity, such as following routines and solving problems without immediate meltdowns. Show consistent skills: Children master daily habits like picking out clothes, brushing teeth or packing a backpack without constant reminders.
Express curiosity in tasks: Young children may say they want to do something routine or ask to try challenging tasks.
Try, and try again: Children may be ready for more independence if they are not discouraged by a small task that goes wrong and instead give it a second or third go.
Follow the rules: Children can be trusted with more independence when they remember safety boundaries and house rules, even when adults are not nearby.
Tackle chores: A good indicator of independence readiness is when assigned chores, such as putting toys away or feeding a pet, can be handled easily and routinely.
Ask for choices: Children may ask to pick out pajamas, play activities or healthy snacks. This can be a clue that they are ready to handle more things on their own.
