Due to the medical equipment warehouse fire in Tracy that broke out on Thursday, Escalon Fire Department officials have announced they are canceling the training burn they had originally planned for Saturday, June 13.
Fire Chief Rick Mello said after reviewing the incident in Tracy, which has prompted air quality alerts for the region and involved several county agencies, hosting a training burn isn’t appropriate at this time.
“We just made the decision,” Mello said shortly before noon on Friday.
The burn was to begin about 8:30 a.m., at a property in the 700 block of Yosemite Avenue in Escalon, and continue through mid-afternoon. Departments often utilize abandoned homes or acquired properties for the training, typically dealing with several scenarios through the course of the day.
The chief said they may plan a training burn there at a later date but are just canceling it for now, in light of the ongoing situation in Tracy.
