A tie on the road, and a win at home were outcomes for Escalon's varsity Lady Cougars on the soccer field this week.

They traveled to Hughson for a match on Tuesday, March 29 and after falling behind 2-0 at the half, came back with a strong effort to earn the draw.

"They were up 2-0, we had a horrible first half and it was pretty frustrating, they were dominating," coach Jamie Peoples said. "We did play well in the second half, at least we came away with a tie."

Second half goals came from Taylor Morrow and Kara McKee, with assists from Ally Gonzales and Sabrina Luque. Goalie Logan LaRossa had three saves.

Hosting Hilmar in a physical contest on Thursday, Escalon held on for a 4-3 win, with Hilmar's first goal coming on a penalty kick early in the game. Another PK with just over two minutes remaining in the contest hit the post and dribbled out in front of the net, but didn't go in, preserving the win for the host Cougars.

"It was a nailbiter but it shouldn't have been," Peoples said. "The first PK, Nicole (Anthony) and their forward just got their feet tangled, they both just tripped."

Peoples said she didn't feel either PK call was clear cut, but was glad especially that the late penalty missed the mark.

"We were up 3-1 at halftime, the coach added.

Scoring for Escalon on the day were Gonzales, two goals and one assist, McKee, one goal and three assists, Gabby Gomez, one goal. LaRossa notched five saves.

"The girls struggled with the heat a little bit," Peoples said of the 80-degree readings for the afternoon contest on Thursday. "We also were without Taylor Morrow, she had been sick."

The combination made for a tougher game than the Lady Cougars were anticipating, but they held on.

The varsity girls were scheduled to play at Modesto Christian on Tuesday, after The Times went to press and have their league bye on Thursday, back in action to start the second round of TVL play on Tuesday, April 12 hosting Riverbank.

Junior Varsity

It was a pair of wins for the JV Lady Cougars, as they started the week off with a 2-1 road win at Hughson.

Sage Gabba got a goal, with an assist from Cassidy Caton, and Carlee Vest netted the other score. Cassie Murken had six saves in goal.

Thursday against Hilmar, the JV girls pummeled the Yellowjackets throughout the contest and took an 8-3 win off the pitch.

Scoring three goals each were Gabba and Caton, with one goal from Vest and one from Juanita Morales. Picking up assists were Leslie Garcia, Claudia Gomez and Yarissa Cruz. Murken had two saves and sweeper Hailye Naber got credit for two saves as well, one on a header on a shot on goal and one where she went into a slide to deflect away the shot on goal.

No action for the JV squad this week, as Modesto Christian doesn't have a JV team. They will host Riverbank in a 4 pm. contest on April 12.
