Three games over four days resulted in two wins for Escalon's varsity basketball girls, the squad taking a pair of victories off the court at home.

They hosted Waterford on Monday, Dec. 15 to start off the week.

"We won, 53-23, we actually shot the ball," said coach Kristie Cathcart. "We started out pressing them and did a good job, then we were able to make some shots."

Shayleen Archer, with 15 points, and Anne Bacay, with 14, paced the varsity girls in the win. Annie Gallego added seven and Jennifer Shipley chipped in with six points on the night.

"We were leading 32-9 at halftime," Cathcart said of getting the early lead. "They needed that."

Bolstered by the win, the girls came back strong on Tuesday night, hosting Downey in another non-league contest.

"The first time we played them, we lost by two," Cathcart said of a Nov.15 game and having some motivation for payback driving her team. "We did a good job pressing again, that forced some turnovers."

The girls were able to convert more often than not on the fast break, ending up with a 46-36 win.

"We had a big fourth quarter, we scored 19," the coach added.

Three players hit double figures for the varsity Lady Cougars in that game, paced by 13 from Archer, 12 each from Gallego and Bacay. Krystal Lawrence put in six.

After a night off on Wednesday, the girls closed out the week with a trip to Ceres for a contest with Central Valley.

"That was not a good night for us, we lost 53-37," Cathcart explained. "We were only down by seven at halftime, they came out and pressed us and they scored 22 in the third quarter, we scored eight.

"We just kind of broke down when they pressed us."

Bacay had eight points in the loss, with seven from Lawrence and six from Archer.

The Dec. 18 game was the final one of the year for the girls; they don't take the court again for a game until Tuesday, Jan. 6, hosting Amador.

"We'll have five practices over the two weeks (of break) and we have to work on different defenses," Cathcart noted. "The first two games we play when we come back will count in the power ratings."

The Lady Cougars will play four 'crossover' games with the Mother Lode League teams, facing Amador and Argonaut first, then playing Linden and Summerville. Trans-Valley League play begins Tuesday, Jan. 20 on the road at Modesto Christian.
