On the road at Waterford, Escalon's varsity Lady Cougars lost a tough, close battle on Monday, Dec. 10, then came home to rough up visiting Big Valley Christian on Tuesday, Dec. 11.

The girls fell in a 41-39 game to Waterford, though Katie Kaech poured in 19 points and Katie Aprile chipped in with 10 points. Misty Hipsher also had a solid game, netting five points.

"We had a slow start," coach Kristie Cathcart said.

Waterford took a 13-6 lead after one quarter, though Escalon got back in the game with a 15-6 run of their own in the second, leading at the half, 21-19. The teams traded points, 13-13, in the third quarter and Waterford took the game with a 9-5 scoring edge in the final frame.

"Katie Kaech fouled out in the third quarter, Kaylan Aufdermaur fouled out in the fourth," Cathcart said, with the loss of those two making a difference.

"We were missing McKenzie (Brown), she had a band revue and Kaitlyn (Brayton) was sick," Cathcart added, noting the team played well down those key ingredients.

"It was pretty close all the way," she said.

On Tuesday, the girls were home to host Big Valley Christian of the Southern League and came away with a 40-14 victory.

"They're a very young team," Cathcart said. "Both teams came out slow, we finally started making some shots."

Escalon took a 10-4 lead after one and kept the pressure on, shutting out the visitors with a 13-0 scoring edge in the second quarter to take control at the half, 23-4.

Second half scoring was in Escalon's favor for both periods, 10-4 in the third, 7-6 in the fourth.

Kaech and Noelle Bellino were leading scorers in that game, with eight points apiece, and Hipsher chipped in with six.

The varsity girls were scheduled to host Central Catholic in Tuesday night action, Dec. 18 after The Times went to press and will be in action at home again Thursday, Dec.20 to face Amador, the game starting at 6:30 p.m.
