The Escalon Outlaws were on the road this week visiting the Argonaut Jr. Mustangs. Following is a recap of the contests.
VARSITY
The Outlaws were looking to build on their week #1 success to extend their record to 2-0. Unfortunately, the Outlaws ran into a buzz saw of sorts. Escalon had few answers to the Jr. Mustangs’ running attack. Argonaut scored 22 unanswered points before Escalon was able to make its own mark on the scoreboard. Matthew Baptista jumped in front of an Argonaut receiver for an interception. Baptista picked up a few blocks and returned the interception 60 yards for a touchdown. The point after touchdown conversion attempt was stopped short of the goal line making the score 22-6.
Argonaut was able to get to the Escalon end zone one more time before the halftime intermission with a sustained drive powered by the running game. Most of the Jr. Mustangs scores came from long range. The point after conversion was stopped, but Argonaut pushed the lead to 28-6 at halftime.
The Outlaws would start the second half from the 50-yard line after a failed on-side kick. Escalon would move the ball steadily down field on tough running by Baptista, Ryker Peters and Logan Anderson. Donovan Rozevink cashed in the offensive effort on a 1-yard dive into the end zone through the right side of the line. Baptista was able to punch in the point after conversion to make the score 28-14 in favor of the Jr. Mustangs.
The Outlaws could not hold the Argonaut onslaught, surrendering another touchdown after a superb defensive play by Tate Christensen tackling the Jr. Mustangs running back in the back field for a loss. Christensen had many similar stops during the game; Escalon just could not build on those small successes. Argonaut would score with the point after conversion making the score 36-14. Escalon would reach the Argonaut end zone one last time. The drive was a quick strike as Rozevink found an open Owen Nash behind the Jr. Mustangs’ defense for a 32-yard gain. Two plays later Anderson would race around the left end for a 26-yard score. The point after conversion was stopped. Escalon was able to inch as close as they would get 36-20.
Argonaut would take the ball to the end zone one more time before the final horn would blow. The point after would be converted and the final score would be set at 44-20.
Escalon will be on the road again next week to meet the Amador Jr. Buffaloes.
JUNIOR VARSITY
The Escalon Outlaws Jr. Varsity was able to corral the Argonaut Jr. Mustangs with a 32-8 victory pushing their record to 2-0. Jamin Miller led the Outlaws on offense with two rushing touchdowns and one through the air. Ryan Lewis was on the receiving end of the touchdown pass from Miler to finish off a 45-yard pitch, catch and run. Ruben Moreno added another touchdown to account for all of the Outlaws’ scoring.
The Escalon defensive effort was led by Jaxon Coy, Anthony Jones and Josue Limones.
NOVICE
The Escalon Outlaws Novice displayed extraordinary dominance on the field against the Argonaut Jr. Mustangs. The Outlaws were able to score each time they touched the ball. Conner McDowell, Kyrin Barajas, Ben Gonzalez and Mason Fiser were able to reach the end zone for the Outlaws. The defense stood tall as a team leaving a 40-0 mark on the scoreboard. Ethan Butler notched a safety for the defensive contribution to the final score.
JUNIOR NOVICE
The youngest of the Escalon Outlaws were able to notch a victory for themselves on the road, with five scores to one for their opponent. Carter Castro and Jacob Garza opened holes in the Jr. Mustang defense to allow the Outlaws’ running attack to take shape. Bennett Guevara and Ian Trejo each had two scores. Lucas Trejo added the final tally. Steven Fenton and Bryann Zuniga led the Escalon defensive effort.
