Strong Arms Lift JV Boys To Twin Wins

Winning two out of three, the pitching has been the key for the JV Cougar boys on the baseball diamond.

They were home to host Amador on Tuesday, March 15 and took a 3-0 win off the field.

"Jake Winkler pitched six innings, he gave up no runs and struck out seven," said coach Steve French. "Brandon Collins pitched one inning, struck out two and got the save, they were both impressive."

Escalon managed just two hits themselves but took the win, Eddie DeFreitas had a single and Atom Garcia rapped out a double.

"Our defense was pretty good that game," added French.

The same couldn't be said for Wednesday, as the boys got roughed up at Calaveras, losing 10-1.

"Brandon Collins had a double, he later scored on a ground out RBI by Josh May for our only run," French explained.

Anthony Rodriguez also had a solid single as the Cougars had one run on five hits. They committed six errors, helping contribute to the run-scoring rampage of Calaveras.

"Jimmy Zepeda pitched well, he allowed 10 runs but only four of them were earned, I felt he kept his composure very well," French said. "He scattered seven hits and had six strikeouts."

Friday at Waterford, the JV squad came away with a 9-4 win. This time, it was May getting the start on the mound and he earned the win with a four-inning outing. He was a bit wild, walking seven, but allowed no hits. Collins pitched two innings of relief, Winkler came on for one inning.

"It was a better hitting effort by us this time, we had 12 hits, our best of the year," French pointed out. "Jake Caton had a two-RBI double, Brian French had an RBI single, Eddie DeFreitas and Anthony Rodriguez each had a double."

Errors continued to plague the squad, committing four, but the offense overcame the lack of expertise in the field.

"We're working on it," French said of trying to solidify the defense.

League play starts this week, the boys are scheduled to play at Livingston on Friday, March 25.
