Winter Sports Teams Gear Up For Campaign
ehs

Basketball and wrestling, the traditional ‘winter’ sports at Escalon High School, are being joined this year by boys and girls soccer, which have made the move to the winter season. Previously, boys soccer was in the fall and girls soccer in the spring; both have been reassigned to the winter.

Winter sports squads have been able to get their practices underway and Escalon’s final fall team in action – cross country – closed out its season at the Section Meet on Saturday in Folsom. Now, athletes from that team can switch gears and join their winter sports.

For girls soccer, Jamie Peoples remains the head coach for the varsity squad and Jennifer Schmidt leads the JV team. Linden comes to Escalon for a 3:30 p.m. contest on Tuesday, Nov. 29 to start preseason play, while the Lady Cougars host Argonaut on Wednesday, Nov. 30, also at 3:30 p.m.

On the boys side, Paul Silva returns to coach the varsity boys with Apolonio Rodriguez back for another season with the JV boys. The squads will be at Linden on Tuesday, Nov. 29 for 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. contests, and then travel to Jackson to take on Argonaut on Wednesday, Nov. 30 with games at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

On the basketball court, Martin Louro will be head coach for the varsity boys, Nate Bartelink is back to coach the JV boys and David Anderson is at the helm for the freshman boys. All three teams are expected to suit up for a couple of scrimmages this month, starting on Saturday, Nov. 19.

Joseph Dalpogetti leads the varsity girls team and newcomer Thomas O’Hare will serve as the JV girls coach with the teams starting play by hosting a Round Robin event at EHS on Saturday, Nov. 19 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Wrestlers are preparing for another season under the direction of head coach Derek Scott, with both boys and girls teams hitting the mats this year. Atom Garcia will serve as head coach for the girls team.

The girls are scheduled to start their season with a tournament at McNair in Stockton on Saturday, Dec. 3. The boys will see their JV grapplers go to Oakdale for an event on Saturday, Nov. 26 and the varsity sees their first action on the road at the McNair Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 3.
