A non-league match against Calaveras on Thursday, March 8 saw the Cougars prevail on the tennis courts, and then they headed to Riverbank for doubles tournament play on Friday.

Against the visiting Calaveras squad, the host Escalon team took a convincing win, with top notch efforts from number one girls singles Amanda Salvador and number two boys singles Jack Fitzgerald.

“Amanda won 10-8 in a tiebreaker to get the win,” first year head coach Jack Berry said.

He also pointed to solid work from sophomore Fitzgerald against his Calaveras opponent to get a singles victory.

On Friday, the doubles teams went to Riverbank for the annual tournament there and coming away with a first place trophy was the number two girls doubles pairing of Mya Beary and Elizabeth Shelley.

“They did a great job,” Berry said of the dominating performance.

Also performing well was the Cougars’ number one girls doubles team of Rachel DeVecchio and Mikayla Schut, taking second place honors.

Following the back-to-back action Thursday and Friday, the team gets a bit of a break.

“We’re off this week,” Berry said of not suiting up for any matches.

Weather permitting, the team is hoping to take the courts for practice, working on singles play and getting ready for the upcoming Trans-Valley League campaign.
