Escalon’s Lady Cougars soccer teams both split their Trans-Valley League contests this past week.

The varsity squad hosted Riverbank to open up league play on Monday, Jan. 8 and crafted a 2-0 victory. Playing conditions were not great; the contest was played on a wet, sloppy field and rain fell for much of the game.

“We got goals from Morgan Dominguez and Alondra Martinez,” said head coach Jamie Peoples. “Assists came from Dalsin Alves and Karla Cordova.”

Leticia Gutierrez had one save in goal as the Lady Cougars defense kept Riverbank from mounting too many serious runs.

In a Wednesday game on the road, Escalon got shut out by Ripon, 4-0. Gutierrez had four saves in that contest.

For the junior varsity squad, they also got a shutout victory on the home field against Riverbank to kick off TVL action.

“It was a very good start to league” said coach Jen Schmidt.

Alexis Baron had three goals and an assist; Jaydn Enes had two goals and one assist. Also scoring a goal in the game was Liz Cortes and adding assists were Esmeralda Soto with two, Addie Stewart and Janneth Lagunas with one each.

“Overall I was very proud of the girls for scoring six goals, that was the most we’ve scored in a game so far, and also for getting the shutout,” Schmidt said.

The team didn’t have the same success on the road Wednesday, taking a 2-1 loss to Ripon. Baron got the goal with the assist from Cortez.

“The girls worked hard and hopefully we get the win next time we play them,” Schmidt said.

The Escalon girls were scheduled to be back in action, playing at Mountain House on Monday, Jan. 15 after The Times went to press. They will travel to Hughson for a Friday, Jan. 19 game with a 3:30 p.m. start time and then come home to host Hilmar in a Monday, Jan. 22 TVL contest.
