Fall Squads Eye Start To Preseason Play

With school now back in session, the various Cougar fall sports teams at Escalon High School are looking ahead to their first competition. Practices for all fall sports began on Aug. 12, a week before the first day of school for Escalon.

The fall sports schedule includes some August action, with a full slate of September contests, the majority of those in league play.

Cross Country kicks things off with its annual ‘Purple and Gold team challenge’ on the EHS track this Friday, Aug. 23 and their first action will be at Angels Camp on Wednesday, Aug. 28 facing off with Bret Harte. The first Trans-Valley League meet for the Cougars will be on Wednesday, Sept. 4 at Legion Park in Modesto and the traditional Escalon Invitational at Woodward Reservoir is on the schedule for Wednesday, Oct. 2.

A scrimmage at Oakdale on Saturday, Aug. 24 is on the schedule for the Escalon volleyball squads, and the varsity only will travel to Buhach Colony for the first match of the season, on Tuesday, Sept. 3 at Buhach. A Wednesday, Sept. 4 game will see all three teams travel to Pitman for non-league play with the first TVL contest at home, hosting Riverbank on Thursday, Sept. 19.

Football kicks off with a scrimmage for the JV and varsity against Argonaut at Jackson on Saturday, Aug. 24, with the time to be announced. The Cougars will host Los Banos in the pre-season opener on Friday, Aug. 30 with JV kick off at 5:30 p.m., varsity following. The freshmen are also scheduled to scrimmage Argonaut on Aug. 24, then will have a bye week before hosting Pacheco on Thursday, Sept. 5 at 6 p.m.

The golf girls will scrimmage Hughson at River Oaks on Tuesday, Aug. 27 and then are home to host Modesto Christian in a scrimmage on Thursday, Aug. 29. League play in the Valley-Foothill North starts with a home match hosting Ripon Christian on Thursday, Sept. 5.

Boys soccer starts with a home scrimmage against Waterford on Wednesday, Aug. 28 and then the teams travel to Manteca for a Friday, Aug. 30 non-league contest. Trans-Valley League play starts with a home game, hosting Riverbank on Monday, Sept. 16 at 4 p.m.
