In a 6-3 road win, the Escalon tennis team topped rival Ripon in Tuesday afternoon action, April 19.

Head coach Staci Diaz was pleased to see some strong play that helped lift the Cougars to the league victory.

“It was a tight match all day. Trenton Busch and Jairo Duran (second boys doubles) won the first set, lost the second in a tie breaker, and then came back to win the third set which won us the entire match,” Diaz noted. “They were the fifth win. They played so well and didn’t let the second set loss get to them.”

In girls singles play, number one Taylor Laugero and number two Josie Redberg both made quick work of their opponents, Laugero winning 6-0, 6-0 and Redberg crafting a 6-1, 6-2 victory.

Boys singles saw top seed Michael Medina fall in a tough 3-6, 2-6 decision, with number two Everardo Peralta battling to a 6-4 win in the first set and then having a much less stressful 6-1 second set to win the match.

Boys doubles top seed tandem David Martinez and Tommy Pangan fell to their Indian counterparts, 3-6, 5-7 with Trenton Busch and Jairo Duran then winning 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, pushed to three sets but prevailing in the end.

In 6-4, 6-1 fashion, top seed girls doubles Mic DeVecchio and Nicole Sarkozy were winners and the girls number two doubles of Brooklyn Berry and Courtney Ney fell in a close 6-7 (5-7), 4-6 decision.

Mixed doubles saw Trent Berchtold and Allison Rigg win 6-1, 6-4.

“Allison and Trent were the sixth win for us,” Diaz noted of the final winning match of the afternoon.

Friday’s home match against Hughson was postponed due to rainy weather that hit Escalon from late morning to mid-afternoon; that match was rescheduled for this Monday, April 25, past press time for The Times.

They were also slated to host Mountain House on Tuesday, April 26 and head to the Trans-Valley League Tournament at the SOS Club in Modesto on Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April 30.
