Already displaying a solid work ethic and the desire to win, the JV volleyball girls got the season started on a high note for Escalon, sweeping their first two matches.
They hosted West of Tracy on Tuesday, Aug. 24 and took the match in two games, 25-11 and 25-4.
"Carly Johnson had nine service points and four of them were aces," coach Irene Laugero said of the match vs. West. "She played phenomenal volleyball."
High marks also went to Amanda Santini with three aces on the afternoon. Jennifer Costa and Courtney Russell added three kills each.
"Charlene Swickard, Megan Brown and Mallory Rose played great defense in the back row," added Laugero. "That match went kind of quick."
Traveling on Wednesday, the JV girls took on Oakdale and were again victorious in straight sets, 25-19, 25-12.
"That one was pretty much the same," Laugero said, noting that the strong serving of her team helped provide the margin of victory.
Johnson and Rose had four aces each, Santini added two more. Brown, Costa and Carmen Dollarhide had two kills each and Johnson came up with two blocks in the road win.
Laugero said with 10 players on the team, all had a chance to contribute to the wins this week.
The squad was slated to play Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 30 and 31, after The Times went to press, hosting Summerville on Monday and traveling to Manteca on Tuesday.
"All mine are sophomores, I didn't bring anybody up (from the frosh squad)," Laugero said. "All of them played last year. They are truly dedicated to volleyball and they are so focused."
