The Escalon Wrestling Club kicked off the 2014-2015 season with tournaments at McNair High School in Stockton on Dec. 6 and the SCWAY Tournament of Champions Qualifier tournament at Oakdale High School on Dec. 13. Once again, the EWC will be competing in the SCWAY organization, which is the California chapter of the national organization, NUWAY. The club is headed by President Derek Scott, also the EHS head coach with Nate Nash sharing co-head coaching duties with Scott Page and key returning coaches Eric Rowe and Dimos Birakos, who also heads up the junior high program at El Portal.
Veteran coaches Larry Lawrence, Willy Gonzales, brothers Adrian and Jorge Carrillo and EHS wrestlers Kyle Jimenez and Cameron DuBois round out the coaching team.
“All of our coaches from the last few years are back to help this year and we have a really cohesive staff, really awesome to have everybody on board,” said Coach Nash. “And, of course, Tracey Miller has returned as our Team Mom and has taken the position of EWC Vice President. I can’t really overstate how great it is to have Tracey keeping us organized. She does a tremendous amount for the Club.”
Over 60 kids have signed up for the EWC and have been practicing in the wrestling room at EHS and on the stage in the Old Gym. Next up for the EWC is the SCWAY tournament at Hughson High on Dec. 20.
