Wins against Sonora and Bret Harte saw the Lady Cougars end the first round of golf action with a 7-1 mark.

They hosted Sonora on Sept. 16 and easily defeated their opponents, 164-214.

Ella Adams and Lucy Allbaugh each carded a 39 on the day with Mikayla Schut and Ella MacKinnon both coming in at 43.

“We only had four for this match. Sonora only has two returners, which made for a very slow round,” said head coach Kristie Cathcart. “We are used to finishing quickly at home so this match tested our girls mentally by making them keep their focus.”

Doubling back for another match on the home course on Tuesday, Sept. 17 it was Escalon defeating the visiting Lady Bullfrogs, 165-204.

This time, it was Schut and Allbaugh carding the low rounds for Escalon at 38, Adams had a 44 and MacKinnon a 45.

For Escalon, it again was a day where they had just four players to put out on the course for the varsity match.

“Only had four girls but we’re confident in them to get the job done,” said Cathcart. “Tuesday’s match was the last match in first round of play. We ended the first round 7-1.”

Escalon’s only loss so far in league has come to Ripon.

Wednesday, Sept. 18 the JV players went to Rancho Del Rey in Atwater.

“They play a modified round, with shorter holes. They all did a good job,” Cathcart said.

Sarah Bava, Bella Ambro, Arianna Huntley, Nathalia Guevara, and Gracie Bracco took the course for Escalon.

On Thursday, Sept. 19 the varsity Lady Cougars played at the par 36 Elkhorn Golf Course in Stockton, facing off against host Linden. Escalon won the match, 199-220.

Schut fired a 42 on the day, followed by Allbaugh at 47; Adams, 54; MacKinnon, 56; Jianna Cereghino, 60; Bava, 67.

“It was a good way to start the second round of league,” noted Cathcart.

This week, the Escalon JV girls will take part in a tournament being hosted at the Escalon Golf Course on Wednesday, Sept. 25. Six teams are scheduled to participate, with four to eight players from each team. They will play the course twice, accounting for 18 holes.

“This will be the third year we have hosted this tournament,” Cathcart said.

Varsity action was slated to include the midseason tournament Monday, Sept. 23 at Micke Grove, after The Times went to press, and Argonaut coming to Escalon for a match on Thursday, Sept. 26.
