Game Bird, Dove Hunts Scheduled

Several dove hunt and game bird opportunities have been developed by the Department of Fish and Game in cooperation with the Department of Water Resources (DWR), U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR), Kern Water Bank Authority (KWBA), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the Southern Tulare County Sportsman Association (STCSA).

To provide more hunters with the opportunity to participate in hunts, hunters will be selected for only one hunt area and hunt period.

Winton - Juniors only. Two hunts are scheduled for the first Saturday of the season, Sept. 4, one-half hour before sunrise to noon and 1 p.m. to sunset. These hunts can accommodate 20 hunters in the morning and 20 in the afternoon.

Pilibos Wildlife Area - Two hunts are scheduled for opening day, Wednesday, Sept. 1, and two hunts on Thursday, Sept. 2, one half hour before sunrise to noon and 1 p.m. to sunset. These hunts can accommodate 25 hunters in the morning and 25 in the afternoon. After Sept. 2, the area, except for the closed zone, will be open to dove hunting. A permit is required and may be obtained at the self-registration booth located in the parking lot.

State Wildlife Areas

Mendota Wildlife Area - A limited number of vehicles will be issued parking permits for Lots #21 and #22 on the morning of Wednesday, Sept.1. Permits will be issued at the checking station on a first come, first served basis. For the remainder of the season, hunters may obtain permits from the self-registration kiosk located at the Highway 180 entrance. Los Banos Wildlife Area - Two designated hunt areas will be open Wednesday, Sept. 1 with a total hunter capacity of 100. Section quotas will be filled until 12 p.m.; after 12 p.m. the area will be open to free-roam hunting. The remainder of the area will be open to provide hunting for non-reservation hunters. Total capacity of the area is 300 hunters. The area will remain open for birding, sightseeing, fishing, frogging and dog training; camping will be restricted to the main parking lot Sunday, Aug. 31. Applications must be received by Friday, Aug. 6, by 5 p.m. to be eligible for the drawing. An upland game bird stamp is required of all hunters, except junior license holders.
