Two more wins for the freshmen boys, the Cougar squad putting away Patterson and Riverbank in hoop competition.

Focusing on their defense, the young Cougars defeated Patterson in a home game on Tuesday, Feb. 3, winning 49-43.

"We jumped out to an early 18-8 lead," said coach Nate Bartelink. "We really played good defense that quarter."

The host Cougars led it 26-18 at the half and 34-26 after three, keeping Patterson at arm's length the entire game.

"Brian French had an awesome game, he scored 23 points and had six rebounds, he has been playing really well the last couple of weeks," Bartelink said. "Mike Stime had a double-double, 10 points and 10 rebounds."

Jared August added 10 points and five rebounds in the win.

"It was a good start to the week," Bartelink noted.

The boys then hosted Riverbank as the kick-off game for Friday Homecoming festivities taking an easy 60-31 win off the court.

Highlights of the game included everyone getting into the scoring column and a 3-point shot at the buzzer by Martin Shaw to close out the third quarter.

"We got a lot of playing time for everyone," Bartelink added of the game with Riverbank. "I was really pleased with Taylor Hawkins, his aggressive play, and we got good minutes from Dane Weckerly off the bench."

Escalon took a 16-11 lead after one and then stepped up their pace, leading Riverbank 30-17 at the half.

"The third quarter was where we pulled away, they didn't score at all in the third, they just didn't get any good shots," Bartelink said, noting that his Cougars enjoyed a 50-17 lead after three quarters.

Dan Sawyer paced the squad with 12 points and 10 rebounds, August put in 11, French scored nine and Stime put in seven in the well-rounded effort.

"We're 7-3 in league now and 13-6 overall," Bartelink said.

The freshmen will host Ripon in their final home game of the season on Friday, Feb. 13 with a game time of 5 p.m.
