Final Week Split For JV Volleyball

Splitting their final two matches of the season, the JV volleyball girls lost at home but won on the road.

They hosted Hilmar on Oct. 31 and fell in two, losing by scores of 11-25, 18-25.

"We just did not show up to play," coach Kayla Kootstra said, noting that with an opponent the caliber of Hilmar, the girls needed to be ready.

"They're just a good team," she said. "They served well, they passed well. We played better in the second game."

Unable to win at home in the final week, the JV girls did come out with more determination on Wednesday, Nov. 2, sending the host Modesto Christian team to a loss.

"I was really proud of the girls, one of our outsides had missed practice and the rule is you don't start if you miss so we had a different line up out on the court and they rolled with it," Kootstra said.

It meant just one person in a new position for that match but the girls didn't miss a beat, winning 25-12 in the opener.

"We had our regular line up for game two," the coach said.

Modesto Christian, which has shown great improvement since the start of the season, made game two a tough one, forcing Escalon to battle back to get the win.

"They played right with us," Kootstra agreed. "We were down, 22-24 and we came back to win it, 26-24. The beginning of the season, we lose that game."

Finding a way to win when their opponent needed just one point to close it out showed the growth of the JV girls from Escalon this season as well, said the coach.

"The girls really just wanted to end it strong," she said.
