Escalon sent three athletes to a prestigious meet at UC Davis on Friday, the trio reaching the meet via their posted times and heights in various events.
Marcus Savage qualified for the Division I-sponsored competition in the high jump, Vynce Bacay was tapped for the 200 and Amanda Moreno qualified in the one-mile and two-mile runs.
"In the high jump, the opening height was 6-0, that's a huge place to start," noted coach Rick Heflin, who traveled with the three to the meet on Friday. "Out of the 22 people that were there, only six people made the opening height and Marcus wasn't one of them."
Savage had three attempts at making the height, two times he made it over but caught the bar with his heel and brought it down.
"He almost made it," Heflin said.
Bacay earned a 10th place finish overall in the 200 event, running it in a time of 23:47.
"He came out of the blocks wrong, twisted his hip a little bit," Heflin said, adding that he recovered enough to post a respectable time and finish in the top ten.
For Moreno, she started the day with the mile and finished fourth, breaking the previous Escalon High School record for the event by three seconds.
"She was fourth in 5:05.65, that was enough to break the school record that used to be held by Jennifer Stief," Heflin explained. "Most of the girls in the race were nationally ranked."
And even though she took fourth in the mile, Moreno said that wasn't good enough for the young runner.
"You don't get a T-shirt for fourth place," he noted. "So she ran the 2-mile."
It was another record-breaking effort for Moreno, taking second place in the 2-mile in a time of 10:53.57.
"That was three seconds faster than the school record previously held by Michelle Leinfelder," Heflin said of Moreno's effort. "And she got her T-shirt."
The Cougars, as a team, will be back in action this week, hosting Ripon in a Wednesday, April 21 Trans-Valley League meet at 3:30 p.m.
