Cougar Tennis Team Wrapping Up TVL Play

Escalon’s tennis team played to three more wins in the past week, though a non-league match featured just the Lady Cougars.

In action on Tuesday, April 9 the team traveled to Hughson for a league contest against the Huskies. It was an 8-1 victory for the Cougars.

Taking wins were boys number one singles Wyatt McCune 6-1, 6-2; girls singles number one Mya Beary 6-0, 6-0 and girls singles number two Mikayla Schut 6-0, 6-2.

Also winning were boys doubles number one Jack Fitzgerald and Eli Lattig 6-4, 6-3; number one girls doubles Elizabeth Shelley and Ella Adams 7-5, 1-6, 6-2; number two boys doubles Evan Shafter and Dylan Criteser 6-3, 7-5; number two girls doubles Madelyn Page and Madison Faria 6-3, 6-3; and mixed doubles Kara Kennedy and Trent Berchtold 6-6 (7-1), 3-6, 6-1.

Only loss on the day came at boys number two singles, though Chaz Cisneros battled his Hughson opponent before falling 4-6, 4-6.

Escalon then took on Millennium High at Escalon Wednesday, April 10 but the school fielded just a girls team. It was a straight sets sweep for all the Lady Cougars, paced by number one singles Beary 6-3, 6-3 and number two Schut 6-0, 6-0; Shelley and Adams teaming in number one girls doubles 6-0, 6-0; Page and Faria winning 6-0, 6-0 at number two girls singles.

Friday, the team wrapped up a successful week, hosting Livingston at home and making quick work of the Wolves.

Singles play saw McCune 6-0, 6-0 and Cisneros 6-1, 6-0 craft wins for the boys, with Beary 6-0, 6-0 and Schut 6-0, 6-1 winning for the girls.

All the doubles teams were winners, Fitzgerald and Lattig 6-1, 6-0; Shafter and Criteser 6-0, 6-0 in boys doubles; Shelley and Faria 6-1, 6-0; Page and Adams 6-1, 6-0 in girls doubles; Kennedy and Berchtold at mixed doubles, winning 6-0, 6-1.

“We are undefeated in league,” said head coach Jackey Blakeley. “We have three more matches to play to determine if we win the TVL title.”

The tennis team was scheduled to play Riverbank on Tuesday, after The Times went to press, and are slated to play at Millennium on Friday.

“The following Tuesday will be our final season match against Ripon on April 23 at Escalon,” Blakeley said.

That will be a make-up of a previously rained out match.

Following that the team heads to the TVL tournament on April 26 and 27 and then move on to sections.
