Expecting to get on the field for three games in their final week of play, the Escalon Cougars Summer Baseball Team ended up with just one contest, falling in a 4-3 decision to Linden on Wednesday, July 14.
They were originally scheduled to host Lodi in a Monday game, July 12 and travel to Central Catholic for a doubleheader on Wednesday to close out the season.
"Lodi canceled on us and then Central Catholic canceled but we were able to pick up a game with Linden," said coach Greg Largent. "We lost a heartbreaker, we were leading all the way, then gave up a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning."
The loss ended the summer league for the team, made up of Escalon High JV and varsity baseball players. They finished with a 12-6 win-loss record, along with two ties.
"It gave them a chance to play and hopefully will get us better for next year," Largent said.
The team had a combined .270 batting average, with three home runs on the season. They scored 114 runs and had a total of 133 hits, with players driving in 79 runs. The team struck out 157 times, earned 90 walks, rapped out 30 doubles, seven triples and recorded 19 sacrifices. As a team, the Cougars had 490 at bats.
Leading the way offensively was Jared August, 20-for-47 on the season with 14 runs scored, 14 RBIs, two homers, three doubles and one triple. He had a .426 batting average. Ross Brayton was 17-for-42 with eight runs scored and 10 driven in, with five doubles, a triple and a sacrifice for a .405 batting average.
Other standouts were Scott Sand, 19-for-50 with 16 runs scored. He drove in nine, had six doubles and two triples, batting .380 for the season. Hitting at a .356 clip was Brian Beeman, notching six doubles and two triples in going 16-for-45. He scored 18 runs and drove in seven.
Steve Largent hit .310 for the summer squad, 13-for-42 with six runs scored. He drove in eight and had two doubles along with three sacrifices. Also hitting at a .300 clip was Eddie DeFreitas, 6-for-20 with three runs scored and three RBIs.
Other players for the squad were Steve Gentry, Grant Goedhart, Peter Krumeich, Jordan Ramirez, Kyle Johnson, Nate Keyser, Anthony Suniga, Joey Pinasco, Colin Riggs, Rory Riggs and Austin Jackson. Krumeich had one home run for the team.
The pitching squad was anchored by Grant Goedhart, winning five while losing one. He pitched 37.1 innings and allowed 15 runs on 32 hits while striking out 49. He walked 12 and allowed just nine earned runs, posting an ERA of 1.70 for the season. August went 5-0 with 28.1 innings pitched, allowing 17 runs on 16 hits with 26 strikeouts and 20 walks. Thirteen of the runs were earned, August had a 3.24 ERA. Also pitching for the team were Krumeich, Johnson, Pinasco and Suniga.
