Early season action for Escalon's varsity soccer girls has included a couple of games at home and a weekend tournament.

They opened up play by hosting Bret Harte on Tuesday, Feb. 26 and lost a 3-1 decision. Amanda Franklin got the Lady Cougars on the board. Kayla Ryan made five saves in goal.

"It was a match that was much closer than the score indicated," said head coach Craig Humrichouse. "It was our first outing, it was their second or third."

A game previously scheduled in Argonaut that had been rained out the previous week was then made up in Escalon on Wednesday, with the Lady Cougars winning it, 4-1.

"Amanda Franklin had all four of our goals for us," Humrichouse said.

Assists came from Esmeralda Gomez, Annie Gallego and Melanie Winkler. Ryan made four saves in goal in a stronger outing for the team as a whole.

"It was a match that we pretty much dominated from start to finish," Humrichouse agreed. "Something to build on."

In the weekend Amador-Argonaut Tournament, co-hosted by those two schools, the varsity girls got four games in, playing two on Friday, Feb. 29 and two on Saturday, March 1.

They took on Golden Sierra in Friday's opener, falling 4-0.

"We played well, we just didn't finish," Humrichouse said. "They're a good team, they ended up taking third in the tournament."

The girls then battled to a 1-1 tie with Amador, Faryn Bolls notching the lone Lady Cougar goal.
