The Tri-Valley Blazers baseball club hosted the Modesto Spikes and the Oroville Olives in a round-robin doubleheader at Riverbank High on June 12. The Blazers beat the Spikes 7-6 but lost to the Olives, 11-9, to split on the day.
The opening game against the Spikes featured a grand-slam from Riverbank's Luke Mangini in the third inning, as the Blazers built a 7-1 lead and held on for the win. The Blazers got on the board in the first inning thanks to the efforts of Escalon High players Peter Krumeich and K.J. Vandagriff.
Krumeich drew a lead-off walk and scored one out later on a single by Vandagriff. Paul Bassi was 2-for-3 with a double to help lead the Blazer attack.
After Oroville beat Modesto, 10-6, the Blazers lost to Oroville 11-9 in the third game. The Blazers fell behind 11-2, but they rallied for three runs in the sixth inning and four more runs in the seventh inning. Krumeich had an RBI single in the sixth inning and later scored on a triple by Bassi.
Krumeich also retired the Olives on one hit in the top of the seventh inning, then hit a key two-run double to left-center. Vandagriff later walked for the third time in the row, but Oroville got a key strikeout to end the game.
Krumeich was 3-for-4 with two doubles in the game, and also played well at shortstop. The Blazers were without eight players who were participating in the annual Rotary Club all-star game in Modesto.
