Continuing a tradition of success, Escalon resident and Modesto Junior College athlete Amy Beeman is headed for the state Junior College track meet in Bakersfield.

Now a sophomore at MJC, Beeman was a standout athlete at Escalon High and has stayed active in sports at the college level. She competed recently in Fresno and finished third overall in the NorCal Heptathlon, advancing to the state meet.

She totaled 3,881 points in the heptathlon, finishing third behind the defending state champion, Delta College heptathlete Lauryn Jordan and Alexis Mack of Diablo Valley College. They amassed 4,763 and 4,140 points, respectively.

Making a jump of 16-4 1/4 in her final attempt at the long jump, Beeman nailed down the third place finish. Previously, she had thrown the javelin 100-1 and finished the 800 meters in 2:34.65 and notched five personal bests - in the 110 hurdles, shot put, javelin, 200 and 800 - out of the seven events.

The two-day, seven-event competition was staged in Fresno, with the top four finishers advancing to Bakersfield.

Escalon High grad Erica Mesker, also attending MJC, totaled 2,611 points in the heptathlon and finished in 11th place overall.
