The Escalon varsity Lady Cougars basketball team grabbed a pair of wins this past week, topping Bret Harte and Stagg.

Head coach Joseph Dalpogetti said the team had to battle back on Dec. 11 to get a win over a tough Bret Harte team.

“We were down 10-1 to start the game but tied it 10-10 by the end of the quarter,” Dalpogetti said.

Down 18-16 at half, the coach added the team used the break to talk about changes to make during the second half as a way to turn the tables.

“We outscored them 21-12 in the third; that ended up being the difference,” Dalpogetti said of taking an eventual 53-46 win. “They had finished better than us in both tournaments we were in and beat us a few days prior so it was a good win for us.”

Alexa Gomez paced the team with 14 points and Brooke Campbell added 10.

Thursday, the girls took a 52-36 win over Stagg, running out to a 20-8 lead in the first and leading by a 34-18 margin at the half.

“Everyone was able to play a lot and get some minutes under their belts as we are still shuffling things around prior to league play coming this week,” Dalpogetti said.

Gomez had 21 points in the game, including five 3’s and Campbell had 15 points in the victory.

The basketball girls are scheduled to open Trans-Valley League play on the road, at Riverbank on Thursday, Dec. 20.
