Baseball Teams Split Contests

Just about everything that could go wrong, did, and the end result was a 7-4 loss to East Union for Escalon's varsity Cougars baseball team.

The loss came in what turned out to be their only game of the week, played on the road Tuesday, March 22.

"It was not a good day for us," head coach Greg Largent said. "We committed six errors, we kind of gave the Lancers a 5-0 lead with two runs in the first and three in the second."

Escalon was not able to dig out from the early hole they put themselves in. Brandon Shaw got the start and could only go an inning and two-thirds, not getting any help for his fielders on the day, and Tyler Vitale came in to finish up the game, going four and a third. Only three East Union runs were earned.

"It's just uncharacteristic for us to spot people five runs," said Largent. "It was new territory for us, but we never gave up."

East Union added two runs in the fifth, Escalon had single runs in the third and sixth, then put two on the board in the top of the seventh and also got the go ahead run to the plate but fell short.

Big hitters were Josh Miguel, 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI, but he also had a tough day in the field, committing multiple errors. Matt Valencia had a double, with singles from Aaron Pangilinan, Robbie Steves, Matt Roberson and Travis Hill. Pangilinan had an RBI and Steves added one on a sacrifice fly.

The varsity boys went 5-3 in preseason and were scheduled to open up Trans-Valley League play at Riverbank on Tuesday, after The Times went to press. They host the Bruins at 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 31.

Junior Varsity

Escalon's JV boys closed out a stellar preseason with an 11-5 win at East Union on Tuesday. They scored two in the first, two in the second, five in the fourth and single runs in the sixth and seventh to take the win.

East Union had a run in the third, four in the fifth. Phillip Kimble was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI, hitting a single, double and triple. Nathan Chunn was 3-for-5 with a single, double and triple, scoring three runs and driving in three. Vince Valenzuela and Raymond Guevara each went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Brent Montgomery got the start and went four and two-thirds, with Chunn coming on in relief to nail down the contest.

Escalon had 12 hits on the day, East Union managed just four. The JV boys will host Oakdale in non-league play today, Wednesday, March 30 and then host Riverbank in a league game on Thursday, March 31 at 4 p.m.
