Rufus Stone

Rufus Gasper Stone, 78, died Monday, April 18 in Norfolk, Virginia.

Mr. Stone lived briefly in Escalon during the early 1940s. He moved here in 1943 with his parents, the late Ollie and Beatrice Stone. While in Escalon, he enjoyed playing baseball for the Escalon Sportsman's Club, and a picture of him with the team still hangs in the Club. He joined the Army in 1946 and served for three years. Nine months after leaving the Army, he enlisted in the Navy and served until his retirement. He was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia for most of his career.

He is survived by his son, Rufus "R.G." Stone of Chesapeake, Virginia; two grandchildren; a sister, Louella Tune of Escalon; and brothers Dallas Stone and Norman Stone, both of Escalon, James Stone of Bullhead City, Arizona, John Stone of Redding, California, and George Stone of Lodi.
