Robert “Bob” Bookwalter Jr., of Escalon, died on Wednesday, May 8 at Doctors Medical Center while members of his family were at his bedside.

He was born in Modesto and raised in Escalon where he lived for 60 years before moving to Modesto 18 years ago. He attended Escalon schools, Modesto JC and graduated from Sacramento State University in 1960. He served in the US Army while stationed in Korea from 1955-1957. He was a member of Saron Lutheran Church and Escalon Lions Club. In his younger years, he loved to play golf.

Survivors include his loving wife of 52 years, Dorene Bookwalter; brother, Jerry (Jean) Bookwalter of Richland, Washington; nieces and nephews Terri Bookwalter, John Bookwalter, Dana, Debra and Damon Bookwalter; his brother-in-law Robert Dahlin and his children, Kiersten Hattemer, Keith Dahlin, Chandra Gardner, Ashley and Stefan Dahlin; along with 11 great nieces and nephews. He loved them all as they loved him and they will dearly miss their fun loving, ‘Uncle Bobby.’

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lural and Robert Bookwalter Sr.; his brother, David Bookwalter and sister-in-law Carolyn Bookwalter.

Family and friends will always remember and also miss his passionate love for laughter as he possessed a unique sense of humor enjoyed by all.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 15 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Deegan Funeral Chapel in Escalon.

A Graveside Service will be Friday, May 17 at 10 a.m. at Burwood Cemetery, Escalon, followed by an 11 a.m. Memorial Service at Saron Lutheran Church, 1742 North St., Escalon.

Memorial donations may be made to Saron Lutheran Church.
