Peter L. Arellano, 93, passed away on June 14, 2015. Pete’s passions were sports, coaching, family and Escalon. Pete grew up in Sonora, California. He was a star athlete and was fondly known as “Chessie” to those in his hometown. He was a military veteran serving in the Air Force during WWII and was stationed in the South Pacific, Australia, New Guinea, the Philippines and Europe. After WWII, Pete graduated from San Jose State and began a career in teaching and coaching. Pete moved to Escalon and lived there for over 59 years. Pete proudly worked as a teacher and coach at Escalon High School for over 30 years. He was known to many around town as “Coach Pete” and after retiring, he continued to live an active lifestyle attending numerous Escalon High School sporting events, golfing and helping in the community. Pete was very involved in the Escalon community in a wide array of activities to include serving in the Lions Club for over 65 years with perfect attendance and he was Past President, Past Secretary, Past Bulletin Editor, Past Director, Past Zone Chairman and Chairman for over 35 years. In younger years, he was involved with the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church YMI. He was an AFS host family to international students, Stockton County Fair Escalon Exhibit Co-Chair for over 20 years, hosted Bingo lunch with seniors twice monthly, he was honored as Citizen of the Year and selected as Mr. and Mrs. Escalon along with his late wife Sheila. In recent years, he started the Peter Arellano Athletic Scholarship and hosted the Peter Arellano Athletic Scholarship Golf Tournament to raise money for scholar athletes from Escalon High School. Pete was an amazing and inspiring person. He was always full of energy with a big smile on his face and a true zest for life. Pete was a very loving Husband, Brother, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather and a good friend to many. Pete was truly one of a kind with his contagious energy and confidence. Pete lived life the way that it should be lived; he enjoyed simple things and made the most of every day. Pete’s smile and generous spirit will be enormously missed by all who knew him, especially his family.
Pete is survived by his children, George Arellano of Hong Kong, Tina Jensen (Gale Jensen) of Oakdale and Bahrt Arellano (Caroline Orille) of Albany; his grandchildren; Kim Theisen (Jeff) of Sanger, Craig Berchtold (Denise) of Escalon, Holly Page (Scott) of Escalon, Heidi Rech (Richard) of San Francisco, Jeremy Jensen (Lindsay) of Escalon, Cortez Arellano of Albany and Vincent Arellano of Albany. He also leaves behind his great-grandchildren; Kelsie and Callie Theisen, Trenton and Emma Berchtold, Madelyn and Colton Page, Olivia and Vivian Jensen and his sibling Graciano “Tete” Arellano of Sonora. Pete is preceded in death by his wife Sheila Arellano.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Deegan Funeral Chapels. A funeral mass will be held Friday, June 26, 2015 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Escalon at 10am.
