Maria Garcia Castro, 81, of Escalon passed away at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto on Monday, Dec 17 after a long illness.

Born on April 18, 1926, she came to the United States to Lowell, Mass. from Flamengos, Azores in 1968. She moved to the Bay Area in 1977 and to Escalon in 1988 after retiring. She had been employed by various factories and a nursery. She enjoyed working with plants and was a good seamstress. She became a U.S. citizen on March 23, 1993.

Survivors include her step-sons, Manual B. deCastro (Bernadette) of Escalon and Jose B. deCastro (Maria Luiza) of Faial, Azores; a brother, Joao Garcia daSilva (Maria) of Pico, Azores; four step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Inacio Castro of Escalon, and three brothers of the Azores.

Visitation at Oakdale Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, Dec. 26 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a rosary at 5:30 p.m.

Services will be at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Oakdale, on Thursday, Dec. 27 at 10 a.m. Burial at Oakdale Citizens Cemetery.
