Edna Mae Ihrig, 91, passed away peacefully at Bethel Retirement Community on Sunday, May 2, just short of her 92nd birthday.

She was born in 1918 in Urich, Missouri to Orville and Mamie Gooch. Her family eventually moved from Missouri to Los Angeles, CA and that is where she met her husband of 61 years, Omer Ihrig. They married on April 29, 1939 and had three daughters. Omer had a lifelong dream of becoming a dairy farmer and in 1947 the whole family moved from Pico to Escalon.

While her husband ran the dairy, Mrs. Ihrig held different jobs after the girls started school. She worked at Woolworths in Modesto and the old Bender's Bakery in Escalon. She went to work for the City of Escalon as the Secretary/Treasurer after its incorporation. She retired in December 1974.

During this time the family was very active in the Covenant Church in Escalon. She had previously attended the Second Brethren Church in Los Angeles and was baptized Nov. 1, 1931. The church and her many church friends were a very important part of her life. She served the Lord in many different capacities throughout her lifetime.

She and her husband moved to Modesto in 1980 where they became very involved with the seniors at Big Valley Grace. They made many friends there and enjoyed traveling, going on cruises, and camping.

After her husband passed away, she started attending Shelter Cove in 2002 where she once again had many friends in the seniors group. Because of ill health, she had not been able to attend church on a regular basis for the past two years but she enjoyed watching Pastor Siefert on television.

Survivors include her three daughters and their husbands, Bonnie and Danny Richardson of Fort Bragg, Barbara and Russ Kelly of Modesto, and Joyce and Roger Berhorst of Escalon; nine grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren including Mallory and Preston Berhorst of Escalon and Troy David Scholle of Sacramento.

She was preceded in death by her husband Omer, her parents, and one brother, Francis Eugene.

A memorial service is planned at the Shelter Cove Community Church, 4242 Coffee Road, Modesto. Call Deegan Funeral Chapel at 838-7321 for additional information.

Arrangements by Deegan Funeral Chapel, Escalon with an online guest book at www.deeganfuneralchapels.com.
