Denis W. 'Bill' 'Biley' Armstrong, 64, died the week of Sept. 9 of lung failure at UC Davis Medical Center.

He was a native of Oakdale and moved to Groveland in 1977. While growing up, he helped his dad irrigate and work cattle.

Mr. Armstrong served in the National Guard.

He majored in forestry at San Luis Obispo (1974) and worked for the U.S. Forest Service in Groveland/Buck Meadows as a contract administrator and seasonal firefighter from 1977-2007. Upon retirement he became a Giants and 49er fan and enjoyed trips to Lake Tahoe and Reno.

He traveled to Europe, Costa Rica, Hawaii, and took fishing trips to Mexico and Alaska. He also took short work assignments in Washington, D.C., Florida, and Texas and toured the U.S. by train.

His hobbies included softball, fishing, bird hunting, reading, and attending happy hour at the Iron Door Saloon.

He is survived by his son, Pat Armstrong of Groveland; mother, Bertie Armstrong of Oakdale; brother, Scott (Lori) Armstrong of Escalon; sisters, Jane (Silvio Jr.) Rossini, Jacque Armstrong, all of Oakdale; one nephew of Valley Home; and three nieces of Escalon.

He was preceded in death by his father, Dennis Armstrong.

Burial will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 21 at St. Louis Catholic Cemetery, La Grange. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at Oakdale Memorial Chapel.
