Friday night's home varsity boys basketball game will include a little something extra ... the crowning of a Homecoming King from among a court of five candidates.

The contest against Ripon Christian will be Escalon's first home Trans-Valley League game of the season (they were at Modesto Christian on Tuesday) and will culminate the week's fun activities as part of the Winter Homecoming celebration.

Special dress up days on the schedule include Wide Screen Wednesday today, Jan. 20 with students dressing up as their favorite movie character, Thursday will be 'Snow Gear' day and Friday will be the traditional Purple and Gold Spirit Day. Tuesday was Collegiate Day, with students wearing college apparel.

There was no school on Monday, which was observed as Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Still to come is a Friday afternoon rally, in which the King candidates will be put through the paces in a variety of activities.

Candidates are Zac Baker, Travis Cardoza, Jason Diniz, Spencer Franceschetti and Nick Largent. All five seniors played football for the Cougars during the fall and Cardoza and Franceschetti are also playing a winter sport, hitting the court for the basketball Cougars.

Each class level will decorate a backboard in the gym to take part in a decorating contest, with the winner also announced at halftime.

King candidates will be escorted to center court at halftime of the varsity game on Friday night by their parents, to await the announcement of the new king. Homecoming Queen Jamie Franceschetti will present the crown.

The festivities kick off with the freshman basketball game against Ripon Christian at 4:30 p.m. The JV game is at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
