San Joaquin Regional Transit District (RTD) has announced the appointment of John Van Camp as its permanent Chief Operating Officer (COO). Van Camp, a highly respected member of the RTD leadership team, brings more than two decades of experience in maintenance operations, fleet management, organizational leadership, and public transportation services to his new role.

Van Camp previously served as RTD’s Maintenance Superintendent before being appointed Acting Chief Operating Officer. His appointment as permanent COO reflects RTD’s confidence in his leadership abilities, operational expertise, institutional knowledge, and continued commitment to the agency’s mission.

As Chief Operating Officer, Van Camp will provide executive leadership and oversight of RTD’s Maintenance, Facilities and Transportation departments. He will be responsible for strengthening operational performance, promoting safety and accountability, improving service reliability, and ensuring the efficient delivery of public transportation services throughout San Joaquin County.

Van Camp began his career with RTD in February 2014 as a Maintenance Supervisor. In June 2022, he was promoted to Assistant Maintenance Superintendent, followed by his advancement to Maintenance Superintendent in February 2024. Throughout his tenure, he has demonstrated exceptional dedication to RTD’s operations, overseeing fleet maintenance, vehicle procurement, capital improvement initiatives, contract administration, and labor relations.

His contributions have supported RTD’s fleet modernization efforts, operational improvements, and ongoing commitment to providing safe and reliable transportation services to the communities it serves.

Prior to joining RTD, Van Camp spent nine years with Cummins as a Shop Foreman, where he developed extensive experience in diesel technology, maintenance management, workforce supervision, and operational efficiency.

RTD Chief Executive Officer Eric Williams expressed both his confidence and excitement regarding Van Camp’s appointment.

“John Van Camp has earned the respect of his colleagues throughout RTD through his dedication, professionalism, strong work ethic, and willingness to lead by example. One of my priorities as CEO is to recognize and develop the talented individuals already within our organization who have demonstrated the ability to lead RTD into the future,” said Williams. “John’s appointment represents more than a leadership transition. It reflects our commitment to building a stronger organization by investing in individuals who understand our operations, value our employees, and recognize the importance of the services we provide to our communities.”

Van Camp’s appointment reinforces RTD’s commitment to leadership development, organizational stability, operational excellence, and the advancement of qualified internal talent.

RTD looks forward to his continued leadership and contributions as the agency works to strengthen its services, expand regional collaboration, and meet the evolving transportation needs of the communities it serves.

“As RTD continues to evolve and strengthen its regional transportation partnerships, I am confident that John’s leadership will be instrumental in improving operational performance, supporting our workforce, and advancing our vision for the future of public transportation throughout San Joaquin County,” Williams added.
