The victim in an Oct. 10 attempted robbery and shooting at Escalon’s Family Dollar is at home recovering, while two suspects have now been arrested in connection with the case.

The two – 34-year-old Andre Brooks and 33-year-old Brian Sewell – were arrested Nov. 9 for the Escalon incident as well as similar robberies in Oakdale, Waterford and Stockton.

“It was a collaborative effort,” Escalon Police Chief Gustavo Flores said following the arrests, noting that other agencies involved were the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department, San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Department, Stockton Police Department and Oakdale Police Department.

The 18-year-old victim was shot multiple times during the Oct. 10 incident in Escalon; the investigation determined that Brooks was the one that entered the store for the robbery attempt that ended in the shooting, while Sewell was driving the getaway car.

Brooks was booked into Stanislaus County Jail without bail following his arrest and his court date is pending; Sewell was booked at San Joaquin County Jail without bail and his next court date has been set for Nov. 29.

Flores said authorities were in contact with each other while developing leads in the case, but couldn’t share much of what was going on with the public until they were able to fit the pieces together in terms of the pair being involved in a multi-city robbery spree.

Flores said tips from Escalon residents also were crucial in getting both the shooter and the driver.

The local department had also been doing stepped up security checks at many stores around the community during the investigation.

“The victim is improving, she’s home and doing a lot better,” added Flores. “The family is very happy that these two people are off the street.”

Multiple felony charges were filed against Brooks and Sewell, including attempted murder and robbery.
