Acting on information received, members of the Escalon Police Department seized nearly 100 pounds of illegal fireworks on Friday, June 26.

According to a press release issued by police, “the Escalon Police Department received information of a subject possessing a cache of illegal fireworks in the 17000 block of Escalon Avenue” and conducted an investigation.

It was also discovered that the resident, identified as 36-year-old Michael Lial of Escalon, was on searchable probation for possession of illegal fireworks.

Officers Poortinga, Cruz and Harrison conducted a probation search of Lial’s residence and found 97 pounds of illegal fireworks.

Among the fireworks seized, the police reported indicated, 113 of the fireworks were “M” type, which are not commercially manufactured and fall under the description of a destructive device. It was also learned that some of the fireworks had been purchased by local residents from Lial via the “Offer Up” app.

Lial was subsequently arrested and booked at the San Joaquin County Jail for felony possession of a destructive device.
