Named recently as the Students of the Month at El Portal Middle School, honorees included one sixth grader and two seventh grade students. Madison Smith, Caleb Cavanaugh and Clare McPherrin were the January selections.

The recognition program is sponsored by the Escalon Kiwanis Club, highlighting the academic, athletic and citizenship achievements of students.

Sixth grader Madison Smith was nominated by teacher Kayla Jefferson, cited for positive leadership, outstanding citizenship and for being an overall excellent student.

“Madison embodies what it means to be an excellent student,” said Jefferson. “Her on task behavior, self-motivation, and attention to precision make her a role model for all students.”

Jefferson added that the sixth grader “excels in all subject areas” and takes pride in her work.

“Her dedication and hard work deserve to be commended,” said Jefferson.

Caleb Cavanaugh, a seventh grader, was nominated for the honor by teacher Justin Cohea. Academic growth, positive leadership and outstanding citizenship were listed as the reasons for the nomination.

“In ELA iCore 7, Caleb has shown tremendous growth and dedication to his schoolwork,” Cohea said. “He helps partners who struggle, asks questions when he is confused, and stays longer if he needs to complete work. His growth on two separate reading assessments has been far above average.”

Because of the growth, Cohea said Caleb was recommended and moved into a more rigorous, challenging ELA class.

Nominated by teacher Jill Riesenbeck, seventh grader Clare McPherrin was honored for her positive leadership and outstanding citizenship.

“Clare exhibits leadership through respect, diligence, and willingness to help everyone in class,” said Riesenbeck. “Her exemplary citizenship is acknowledged and appreciated by everyone around her.”
