A 20-year old Texas man remained in custody in the San Joaquin County Jail as of Tuesday morning, Jan. 23 following his arrest in Escalon.

Raul Soto, 20, of Cactus, Texas was arrested on Tuesday, Jan. 16 in Escalon after Officer Carl Poortinga made contact with him. Police received a report of a suspicious vehicle parked in the 1500 block of Yosemite Avenue and Poortinga responded to the area.

Soto was the only one in the vehicle and originally provided Officer Poortinga with a false name.

A search of Soto’s vehicle resulted in the discovery of a loaded .40 caliber Glock pistol with a 22 round magazine affixed to it. Also found in the vehicle was a loaded 8 round magazine and approximately 90 grams of marijuana. Soto also had a concealed fixed blade knife on him.

He was subsequently arrested for carrying a loaded firearm in public, being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a high capacity magazine, possession of more than 28.5 grams of marijuana, and possession of alcohol.

Soto was booked into the San Joaquin County Jail and Escalon Police Chief Mike Borges said an additional charge was filed at the jail after Soto reportedly got into a scuffle with officers there while being booked.
