A two vehicle accident at the intersection of Lone Tree and Carrolton roads on Tuesday night, March 20 left one child dead, another injured and both drivers with serious injuries.

The California Highway Patrol investigated and said a 2008 Dodge Dakota, driven by an 18-year-old Escalon man, was northbound on Carrolton Road, approaching the intersection with Lone Tree as a 20021 Chevrolet Tahoe was eastbound on Lone Tree. The crash occurred shortly before 10 p.m.

Based on physical evidence at the scene, CHP officers said it appeared the driver of the Dakota failed to stop before entering the intersection and collided with the Tahoe, which was passing through the intersection. Carrolton has a stop sign; Lone Tree does not have one at that intersection.

As a result of the collision, the Tahoe was pushed northbound, where it collided with a wooden power pole and knocked down multiple power lines. The vehicle came to rest on its right side in a grass field north of the power pole.

The Dakota continued into a grass field to the north of Lone Tree Road and came to rest on its right side.

The driver of the Dakota was not wearing a seatbelt and was transported to San Joaquin General Hospital with major injuries. The driver of the Tahoe was not wearing a seatbelt and was also taken to San Joaquin General with major injuries as well.

A three-year-old female passenger in the Tahoe was not secured in a child safety seat and was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision. A seven-year-old boy in the Tahoe was secured in a child safety restraint system and was taken to San Joaquin General with moderate injuries.

There was intermittent rain at the time but investigators said the weather did not appear to be a factor in the cash. Alcohol and/or drugs also did not appear to be a factor.

Authorities had not released the names of those involved by press time on Tuesday; however, a post to the local We Escalon website announcing a gofundme account for the family indicated the seriously injured driver of the Tahoe was Jose Luis Gonzalez, 50, of Escalon and his children were those in the vehicle with him, a 7-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter, who died of the injuries sustained in the crash.

Authorities on Wednesday identified the 3-year-old victim as Gardena Gonzalez of Escalon.
