The call for volunteers has gone out, as an effort through the Department of Fish and Game is designed to clean up and create a healthy environment on the Stanislaus River.

Specifically, this effort will focus on a portion of the river flowing through Oakdale, near the Highway 120 bridge at the north end of town.

Lieutenant Phil McKay of the Department of Fish and Game is helping to coordinate the effort and has scheduled the first Saturday morning of each month from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for the clean-up detail. Starting this Saturday, Feb. 6, all those interested are invited to come and help clean trash and debris on both sides of the river. Notices will be posted on campsites prior to the clean-up. Camping beneath the bridge and on private property along the river is illegal.

Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson assured there are places for the campers if they choose to use them.

Volunteers that want to join the effort and clean up the entrance to the city are encouraged to meet in the parking lot of the Oakdale Shopping Center this coming Saturday morning in time for the 9:30 a.m. start.

Bring boots, gloves, and plastic bags or buckets for the debris.
